The World Heritage Center

Rooting from the necessity to provide a better and clearer understanding of the importance of cultural heritage preservation, ICOMOS, together with UNESCO, dedicates its efforts to spearheading this movement. Among the many shifts in the international order from 19th century historical events, architectural heritage takes its value into the international domain as various organizations such as ICOMOS were established to safeguard its essence. Over the decades, with more than 130 countries taking part in contributing to the conservation of heritage, different international charters have been adapted by the ICOMOS General Assembly and its National Committees. These charters maintain its relevance and contributions toward achieving the goal of better developed cultural heritage conservation through the creation of more encompassing directives and principles. To date, these guiding principles have enabled ICOMOS’ vision towards a more sustainable and informed cultural heritage practice to continue.
